La clientĂšle ne s'est donc pas trompĂ©e et a plĂ©biscitĂ© ce vĂ©hicule bien nĂ©, malgrĂ© une finition mĂ©diocre et un moteur essence d'entrĂ©e de gamme trop juste et un peu gourmand. Le succĂšs du Captur est l'arbre qui cache la forĂȘt. C'est en effet un segment entier qui est en plein essor, celui des crossovers urbains. Nombreux sont les constructeurs Ă s'ĂȘtre lancĂ©s sur les traces du Nissan Juke, le premier du genre Ă avoir rencontrĂ© le succĂšs. Both models are typically French â the Citroen is wonderfully eccentric, the Renault looks more subtle yet remains graceful. Styling For those who grumble about modern car design in the belief that all cars look the same,â the Citroen C4 Cactus should come as a breath of fresh air. The curvy shape is both complimented and contrasted by several striking details, most eye-catching of which are the squidgy Airbumpsâ along the flanks and the bumpers. These soft, deformable sections not only serve a practical purpose â they protect the paint from the sort of low speed impacts that occur in car parks â but they can be coloured in contrasting shades to the rest of the car. Other details like the narrow window line and slim headlights help to give a very contemporary look overall. Although the Captur doesnât quite offer the same visual drama, it remains one of the more classy designs in the compact crossover sector. The bold, almost oversized Renault family face dominates the front, while bright paint finishes with a range of alternative roof colour choices help it to look lively and youthful. Its sculpted bodywork is sure to appeal to those not taken by the chunky styling applied to many other crossovers. Interior Just like the outside, the Cactusâs cabin is interesting to look at and innovative to use. Traditional dials have been replaced with a digital display while, thanks to the large tablet PC-like central screen, the button count is very low, helping the dash to look clean and uncluttered. Other neat touches include a passenger airbag mounted in the roof which frees up additional storage space on the dashboard. The Capturâs design is a little more traditional, but still pleasant to look at. Lots of piano black trim gives it a modern look so long as itâs regularly wiped clean of grubby fingerprints and, while some of the plastics feel a little cheap, the quality of the parts you touch feels high enough. The Captur is the more roomy car, particularly in the back. The Citroenâs rear windows donât wind down, either â in the name of keeping things simple, they hinge outwards instead. Both cars boast generous boots â the Cactusâs 358-litre load bay is impressive, but canât match the Capturâs 377 litres, which can even expand to 455 litres if the rear bench is set into its forward-most position. Driving One of the advantages of crossover vehicles like the Captur and Cactus is that their raised ride heights allow for a softer suspension setup than traditional superminis, which in turn results in a smoother ride. As a result, both of these cars are commended by testers for their comfort. Typically for small cars, however, large bumps and potholes tend to jolt through the cabin. The raised height also gives a better view of the road ahead, increasing driver confidence. The Renaultâs steering is light and sharp, which helps to make it feel agile, though some suggest that a lack of feel makes it difficult to judge when the wheels lose grip. The Cactus benefits from a very low weight â most examples tip the scales at barely more than 1,000kg â though a rather slow-witted steering rack means it never feels quite as nimble as it perhaps should. Engines The Cactusâs low weight brings other benefits, too. The small, frugal petrol and diesel engines have very little to haul around, so performance is fairly sprightly, while fuel economy is even better. The modest turbocharged petrols produce between 74 and 109hp, and all claim to deliver over 60mpg. The most frugal diesel is capable of making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale today. Both units are fairly refined, though testers recommend avoiding the automatic gearbox â its design unquestionably aids efficiency but itâs jerky to use and more expensive to buy. The Capturâs gearboxes are both an improvement over the Citroenâs, though fuel economy isnât quite a match. The claimed of the turbodiesel isnât to be sniffed at, however, and the unit itself is smooth and torquey. A pair of petrol engines feature, too a tiny turbo kicks out 89hp and should manage while a more potent turbo produces 119hp and returns Weâd avoid the former unless youâre planning on staying around town, it feels noticeably underpowered. Value for money The C4 Cactus manages to streak ahead of the Captur in the value stakes. While the basic Captur offers air conditioning and alloy wheels as standard â two features the entry-level Cactus lacks â the Citroen costs ÂŁ1,300 less. Compare the two top-of-the-range petrol models, and that difference creeps up towards ÂŁ3,000, yet the Cactus remains both cheaper to run and faster. All Cactus models feature a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, LED running lights and cruise control as standard, while top spec Flairâ models get 17-inch alloy wheels and a reversing camera. Both cars fall into very similar insurance groups, and both pump very little carbon dioxide from their exhaust pipes, helping to keep road tax costs low. Both have been crash tested by Euro NCAP, and the Renault came out on top with a maximum five-star rating. That isnât to say the Cactus is unsafe, it was marked down for lacking an autonomous city braking system â a standard-fit feature for the Captur. Verdict Both cars rank very highly in the compact crossover class but, in a head-to-head contest, the Citroen wins it. Both are comfortable, fugal and stylish, but the Citroenâs tiny running costs, lower purchase price and added charm helps it win us over. Youâre looking at it the Citroen C4 Cactus. Itâs certifiably one of the quirkiest and coolest looking cars on the market. And, itâs coming to Australia at the end of the we couldnât wait for it to arrive in Australia, we jumped behind the wheel of the C4 Cactus in Queenstown, New Zealand, to see if all the hype around its local arrival is in 10 body colours and four 'airbump' colours, the Citroen C4 Cactus is available with two petrol and one diesel engine option. While pricing hasnât been announced for the Australian market, itâs expected to start around the $25,000 mark and will compete against cars like the Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, Renault Captur and Peugeot components called airbumps, featuring on the sides and edges of the car, were designed to protect the C4 Cactus from accidental damage at shopping centres and car parks. The carâs airbumps donât require maintenance and are made of a highly durable thermoplastic polyurethane material designed to resist impact roof rails flank the gigantic panoramic glass roof that stretches almost the entire length of the car. Cleverly, the panoramic glass roof is thermally insulated and acoustically designed to remove the need for a sliding blind, which also saves up to 6kg of of weight, in some configurations, the C4 Cactus weighs in at less than one tonne â considering the size of the car, thatâs the bonnet, the C4 Cactus is available with two engine types petrol and diesel. Producing 55kW, 60kW and 82kW of power in three-cylinder turbocharged petrol form, the diesel option is a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 63kW of power. Available gearboxes include a five- and six-speed manual and six-speed automated turbocharged diesel test car was mated to a six-speed robotised clutchless manual gearbox, producing 63kW of power and 230Nm of torque. While that may not sound like much, itâs over 230Nm of torque per tonne, which is better than the competition in this segment. This opens up an litre storage cavity in the seat leg and headroom is surprisingly accommodating. The comfortable rear seats fold down, but donât offer any split folding. This, in addition to pop-out windows in place of wind-down windows, is a chase for weight capacity is good at 358 litres with the second row up. Drop the second row and that space increases to a usable and cavernous 1170 litres. While itâs more than the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke, it sits behind the Renault Capturâs 377-litre are known for their excellent ride quality, and the C4 Cactus is no exception. Our New Zealand road trip included suburban driving, along with a stint to the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground, which required snow chains â and woollen ride stood true to Citroenâs comfort oriented philosophy. Bumps and rough surfaces were dispatched with ease and the pliant damping kept the ride smooth. Even the handling on some of the icy mountain roads was impressive with the electrically-assisted steering rack offering ample amounts of feel and strong diesel engine offered impressive in-gear acceleration for overtaking and climbing mountain the entire package was let down by the robotised manual gearbox. While a robotised manual requires pre-emptive throttle lift to avoid jerkiness, even this wasnât enough to prevent unpleasant lapses in torque during gear was made even worse when pulling out in traffic where throttle lifting wasnât possible, or when the gearbox would kick down during a tight hairpin turn on a mountain road where second wouldnât offer enough torque, but first would sit too high in the rev the move, the gearbox is fine, but itâs one worth avoiding if you donât mind shifting manually Citroen C4 Cactus is the ultimate in cool and quirky motoring. On est assis haut et plutĂŽt bien dans le Captur, tandis que dans le Cactus on ne domine pas la circulation et il est impossible de rĂ©gler le volant en profondeur. Il vaut mieux oublier les promesses de prix âdiscountâ que fait miroiter CitroĂ«n, car si le premier prix est aguicheur Ă 13 950 âŹ, câest avec le trĂšs modeste VTi de 75 ch et un Ă©quipement dĂ©pouillĂ©. Notre CitroĂ«n C4 Cactus VTi de 82 ch, en finition Shine, atteint 18 700 âŹ.
